I am the mother of two Black sons and am overwhelmed by the reality around me. I do not trust this country with their safety. I do not believe living in the United States — despite the many so-called advantages that come from that — is what is best for them.
I do not trust the systems in place to protect us. I am on high alert every time we leave our home. I can’t escape the sense of imminent danger that follows us wherever we go.
I don’t want my children, and especially my sons, to live in a country where their lives aren’t valued, where just existing while Black puts them at risk of death. Being Black in the United States means suffering from Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) from simply trying to live your life.
White supremacy is a social construct and racism is the hate language of this country.
